Shrove Tuesday otherwise known as pancake day Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of Lent. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. It is traditional to give up certain foods during Lent. So that no food was wasted there would be a feast before Lent began and it is probably from here that the tradition of wrapping food in pancakes began and is continued to this day. These pancakes can be combined with sweet or savoury fillings or merely sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Some ideas for savoury pancakes include cheese and spinach, smoked salmon and cream cheese, Sweet pancakes can be crepes suzette, pancakes set alight in a pan of orange juice sugar and brandy/Grand Marnier. Alternatively try some of the fillings below. We also stock pancake mixes and "Suzettes" pancakes in our freezer section.
